The EU’s updated Industrial Strategy is addressing strategic dependencies and charting Europe’s path in its digital and climate transitions. The Global Electronics Association supports government policies that bolster the region’s electronics manufacturing base.

On 11 June 2021, the German Supply Chain Act was adopted by the German Parliament by a large majority, introducing binding human rights and environmental due diligence obligations for companies. After lengthy and difficult negotiations, the political groups found compromises on several key aspects of the law ranging from the scope of companies covered to the question of liability. The aim of the law is to foster responsible business conduct and remove illicit practices such as child labour from supply chains.

On May 26, 2021, Chemical Watch and IPC co-organized a webinar, “China’s MEE Order 12: An Update for the Electronic Industry.” MEE Order 12 is the China’s Ministry of Environment and Ecology Order No. 12, Measures of Environmental Management and Registration of New Chemical Substances, which has registration and filing requirement for manufacturers and importers of new chemical substances.

The government of India is nearing completion of European-style regulations on chemical substances. A sixth and expected-to-be final draft of a new Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) rule – similar to the European Union’s REACH legislation – will be released later this year by India’s Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
